Ohio Artist of Year plays at Columbus Pride rally
Jenny Morgan, a Columbus area singersongwriter will be among the featured performers at the 1994 Pride March on June 19 in Columbus.
Morgan was raised in the ClintonvilleBeechwold area, and began performing locally when she was only fifteen years old. After graduating from Whetstone High School in 1983, she studied at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. While there she performed regularly at university functions, as well as coffeehouses and ra lies throughout the New England states.
Morgan moved back to the Columbus area in 1991, and has been performing at local coffeehouses, bookstores, and cafes Jenny Morgan since. Performing regularly since her
move, Jenny has allowed others to witness life through her eyes. Her performance in 1991 at the Ohio Lesbian Festival earned her the Featured Ohio Artist of the Year title, and the respect of many. The subsequent release of her second tape, Jenny Morgan, and her opening performances for international acts, Lucie Blue Tremblay and Megon McDonough, have given her the audience she desires.
Morgan's upcoming performances, along with her third recording, Dreamcatcher,
continue her mission to tell the stories of life. Working with supporting musicians for both productions has allowed her to grow, to share the power of music, and to increase her voice in song. In addition to the 1994 Pride March, Morgan will also be performing at Grapevine Cafe on June 1; the Columbus Arts Festival on June 2; Cappucino Cafe on June 3; Common Ground Coffee Shop on June 10; and Red, White & Boom on July 1.
Columbus rally features movers and singers
Bicentennial Park will be alive with the Rally and Gayfest activities and booths from 2:30 to 6 pm. Many popular community leaders and performers will be making appearances on the Rally stage throughout the afternoon, celebrating the Ohio Family Reunion.
Master of Ceremonies for the Rally this year will be Jeff Jones, who is now a consultant on HIV prevention education for the Ohio Department of Education, Division of Student Development.
The keynote speaker is Stonewall Union's executive director, Phyllis Gorman. She has been with Stonewall for more than two years, coming from a background of teaching at Ohio State and consulting for the Ohio Department of Health on AIDS issues.
There will be other speakers featured as well. One is Bob Haffner, a member of the Speakers Bureau of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), whose gay son will join him on stage as an American Sign Language interpreter.
Consuella T. Jordan will also be at the Rally stage. She has served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Director of the ClintonGore campaign, National Vice President for Minority Affairs with the Young Democrats of America, and Vice Chair of the Ohio Civil Rights Coalition.
Activist Chris Cozad of Stonewall Union will speak. She is also a steering committee member of Ohioans Against Discrimination, a recently-formed statewide coalition to fight anti-gay Radical Right ballot initiatives.
Betsy Marshall will also be at the Rally.
She is state president of the Ohio National Organization for Women, actively lobbying for women's issues and gay civil rights. She also owns a marketing and advertising company, Betsy Marshall and Associates.
Gay and lesbian youth will be acknowledged on Pride Day when a representative of Phoenix Pride speaks. Phoenix Pride is a support group for lesbian, gay and bisexual youth aged 14-21, sponsored by the Southeast Community Mental Health Center and the Franklin County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board.
At 4 pm, couples can take part in a Union Ceremony, an elegantly staged Native American ritual performed by Rickie Marecek. Certificates of union will be available for purchase at Gayfest.
There will be musical performers, too, at the Rally. Look for local songwriter and singer David Wood; he'll be joined by dancers Camella Fury and Marley Howard, known as Danse Wrapture, as they perform "March On," an original song about marching for Pride.
The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus and the Columbus Women's Chorus will sing jointly to open the Pride March Rally. They will also be performing separately in events leading up to Pride Day.
And popular singer Jenny Morgan will close the Rally with two special tunes: the Indigo Girls' "Closer to Fine" and an original song called "It's Not Easy."
Enjoy the day, hear the speakers and performers, socialize and mingle. After all, it's your Ohio Family Reunion.
